Maryland Dental License Renewal

Updated August 2026

Fees, deadlines, and what's required to renew a dental license in Maryland.

Maryland dental credential fees are set by regulation under COMAR 10.44.20 (Health Occupations Article, §§ 4-205, 4-207, 4-304, 4-505, and 12-102.1). Dentists and dental hygienists renew on a 2-year cycle; the last digit of a license number determines the renewal year (odd numbers renew in odd years, even numbers in even years).

Initial licensing fees

License type Initial application fee
Dentist (by exam or licensed in another state) $450.00
Dental Hygienist (by exam or licensed in another state) $275.00
Limited License – Dentist $225.00 (plus $75.00 foreign school credentials surcharge, if applicable)
Teacher's License – Dentist or Hygienist $225.00
Temporary License – Dental Hygienist $75.00
Dental Radiation Technologist (licensed elsewhere) $20.00

Renewal and late fees

License type Renewal fee Late renewal fee
Dentist $560.00 $300.00 (July 1–31 of the renewal year)
Dental Hygienist $182.00 $150.00 (July 1–31 of the renewal year)
Teacher's License $225.00
Dental Radiation Technologist $68.00 $50.00 (March 2–April 1 of the renewal year)

Reinstatement of a lapsed license costs $860.00 for a dentist ($225.00 for a dentist teacher's license), $332.00 for a dental hygienist ($225.00 for a hygienist teacher's license), and $118.00 for a dental radiation technologist certification. A verification of licensure letter costs $20.00 and is mailed within 1–2 weeks of a written request. The Board's full fee schedule (COMAR 10.44.20.02) also lists fees for lost/duplicate licenses ($15.00), specialty identification ($150.00, one-time), and anesthesia/ sedation permits, among others.

Refund policy The Board will refund an initial licensure or renewal fee, less a $50.00 processing fee, to a dentist or dental hygienist who does not qualify for licensure or renewal (COMAR 10.44.20.01C).
Proposed fee increase In 2025 the Board held public forums on a draft amendment to COMAR 10.44.20 that would raise most fees by roughly 30% (for example, the dentist renewal fee would rise from $560.00 to $728.00). As of this writing the increase remains a draft proposal and the fees above are the amounts currently in effect — confirm the current fee schedule on the Board's portal before paying.
