New York Dental License Renewal

Updated August 2026

Fees, deadlines, and what's required to renew a dental license in New York.

A New York dental license is valid for life, but licensees must register periodically to legally practice or use their professional title. Dentists, dental hygienists, and registered dental assistants register on a 3-year cycle (physicians register every 2 years), with the registration period tied to the licensee's birth month. OP mails a renewal notice roughly 4 months before a registration expires, and online renewal is available through the final 5 months of the current period or up to 4 months after it lapses, using the 7-character PIN printed on the renewal notice.

Initial licensure and re-registration fees

License type Initial licensure + first registration Triennial re-registration Limited permit
Dentist $377 $287 $105
Dental Hygienist $128 $88 $50
Registered Dental Assistant $103 $58 $40
Dental anesthesia/sedation certificate (each type) $100 $100

Figures are from OP's published fee chart (revised 7/26). The dentist and dental hygienist re-registration totals include a continuing-education processing fee ($45 for dentists, $30 for hygienists) in addition to the base registration fee. Registered dental assistants have no CE fee component because they have no CE requirement.

If you are not practicing in New York or using your professional title here, you may place your registration in inactive status free of charge instead of paying the renewal fee — you must notify OP of that choice online or on the paper renewal form. Reactivating a lapsed or inactive registration requires a Delayed Registration Application and proof of any missed CE.

Verify current fees Fees are subject to change, and increases can apply retroactively to pending applications. Confirm the current fee schedule at the OP Fees Chart (PDF) before applying or renewing.
